L'élimination rapide des Stars rapproche-t-elle Carbo de Dallas?

Guy Carbonneau alimentera bien des rumeurs ces prochains jours à Dallas.

En fin de saison régulière, Carbo avait été pressenti pour le poste d'entraîneur associé des Stars en prévision de la prochaine saison.

Selon les échos de Dallas, Carbonneau deviendrait le «partenaire» de Bob Gainey derrière le banc. Gainey, le directeur général de l'équipe, a en effet manifesté le désir de revenir derrière le banc un jour ou l'autre.

L'élimination rapide et surprenante des Stars par les Blues, jeudi, pourrait accélérer le processus. L'entraîneur Ken Hitchcock, souvent contesté par ses joueurs, sera-t-il congédié? Hitchock lui-même prévoit des changements.

«Nous avons atteint des sommets extraordinaires avec ce groupe de joueurs depuis quatre ans, a dit Hitchcock à nos collègues américains. Nous avons remporté une Coupe Stanley et atteint une autre finale. Cette période de succès se termine aujourd'hui. Quand on se fait battre hâtivement en séries éliminatoires, quand on se fait battre d'une façon aussi décisive, il faut se remettre en question. Nous allons réfléchir dans les deux ou trois prochaines semaines et poser des gestes en conséquence.»

Une autre déclaration d'Hitchcock laisse un peu pantois, et ne plaira sûrement pas à son patron Gainey. «Il faut se rendre à l'évidence, il y a désormais de meilleures équipes que la nôtre. Même en tirant le maximum de nos joueurs, et ce groupe d'individus a vraiment tout donné, l'équipe que nous avons affrontée était tout simplement supérieure à la nôtre. Il faut que l'organisation se penche sur cette nouvelle réalité.»

Carbonneau, lui, reste étonnamment discret au sujet de son avenir d'entraîneur adjoint avec le Canadien. Il se borne à répéter qu'il règlera la question à son retour du Championnat du monde en Allemagne, qu'il doit d'abord régler un problème avec l'institution scolaire de sa cadette à Montréal avant toute chose. Veut-il seulement se donner un peu plus de temps?

Même André Savard est un peu dans la brume. «Nous savons que Michel Therrien souhaite le retour de ses adjoints. Guy a déjà parlé de ses problèmes personnels à régler avec sa fille. On ne sait pas trop à quoi s'en tenir, mais il ne nous a pas dit qu'il ne revenait pas.»

L'ancien capitaine du Tricolore ne joindra pas nécessairement les Stars. Mais plusieurs facteurs pourraient l'inciter à changer de camp. Carbonneau est proche de Gainey. Il a joué avec lui à Montréal, il a joué pour lui chez les Stars. Son aînée étudie toujours à Dallas, elle fréquente d'ailleurs un jeune joueur des Stars, Brendan Morrow.

Carbonneau a toujours des liens étroits avec l'équipe, il a passé quatre jours à Dallas au début des séries éliminatoires, après l'élimination du Canadien. Si Gainey lui offre le poste d'entraîneur associé, il pourra difficilement refuser. Un entraîneur associé a beaucoup plus de pouvoir qu'un entraîneur adjoint. Carbo restera le second de Therrien l'an prochain s'il demeure à Montréal, mais il serait l'entraîneur «officieux» à Dallas si Gainey met son plan à exécution.

Guy Carbonneau will be the subject of many rumors over these next days in Dallas.

At the end of the regular season, Carbo was sounded out for the position of associate coach for the Stars in anticipation of next season.

According to rumors in Dallas, Carbonneau would become the "partner" of Bob Gainey behind the bench. Gainey, the team’s general manager, indeed has expressed the desire to return behind the bench one day or another.

The quick and surprising elimination of the Stars by the Blues Thursday could accelerate the process. Will Coach Ken Hitchcock, often questioned by his players, be dismissed? Hitchcock himself anticipates changes.

"We have reached extraordinary levels with this group of players for four years," said Hitchcock to our American colleagues. "We won a Stanley Cup and reached another final. This period of success ends today. When you get beaten quickly in the playoffs, when you are beaten in such a decisive way, you have to question yourself. We will be reflecting for the next two or three next weeks and asking some significant questions."

Another comment by Hitchcock is a bit shocking, and will surely not please his boss, Gainey. "You can’t ignore the evidence, there now teams better than ours. Even getting the most out our players, and this group of individuals really gave their all, the team which we faced was quite simply better than ours. The organization has to consider this new reality."

As for Carbonneau, he remains surprisingly reticent about his future as assistant coach of the Canadiens. He limits himself to repeating he will settle the question after his return from the World Championship in Germany, that he must first resolve a problem with the school of his younger daughter. Is it possible he only wants to give himself a little more time?

Even André Savard is a little foggy about things. "We know that Michel Therrien wants his assistants to return. Guy already spoke about the personal problems he has to resolve with his daughter. We don’t know exactly what to think of it, but he didn’t tell us that he wouldn’t return."

The former captain of the Canadiens will not necessarily join the Stars. But several factors could encourage him to change camps. Carbonneau is close to Gainey. He played with him in Montreal, he played for him with the Stars. Not only that, but his elder daughter continues to study in Dallas, and is dating Stars player Brenden Morrow.

Carbonneau still has close links with the team, he spent four days in Dallas at the beginning of the playoffs, after the Canadiens’ elimination. If Gainey offers the post of associate coach to him, it will be hard for him to refuse. An associate coach has much more power than an assistant coach. Carbo will remain second to Therrien next year if he stays in Montreal, but he would be the "unofficial" coach in Dallas if Gainey executes his plan.
