Guy and Blake Sloan

The Drought Ends at Last!

After a glum October and a disappointing loss to Buffalo at Reunion Arena, the Stars' and Carbonneau's scoring drought came to an end on November 5 versus the Phoenix Coyotes. Guy scored 58 seconds into the game, only to have the goal squandered as the Stars gave up three unfortunate tallies. But a five-goal rally in the third, including Carbo's empty-netter with 2.5 seconds left, got the Stars a win which seemed nothing less than miraculous in the context of the drought. Guy also got himself a double minor for high-sticking Rick Tocchet. His feisty play earned him second star of the game in the Dallas Morning News.

Carbonneau fan Eric wrote to me about the game and I'm happy to share his insightful comments on a match I wish so much I could have seen: "The papers and wire services sure didn't communicate who was at the heart of the game...the stuff legends are made of. Carbo was by far the best player on the ice from the opening face off (that he won of course) to the final face off (that he won of course) with a few seconds left in the game to the open netter he made from his knees. Guy took the game into his hands and showed the Stars how to win again. The Stars were down 3-1 in the third period, Guy's line (of kids almost half his age) was far and away the strongest and most hungry on the ice. He led by example and his teammates followed...Go Guy! It's an honor to have a legend like him in Dallas."

Bill Nichols' three stars of the game

11/06/99

1 Brett Hull, Dallas: Led the comeback with two goals, including the game-winner.
2 Guy Carbonneau, Dallas: Except for his slash late in the game, the veteran pulled his teammates on his shoulders with his play, which included the first and last goals.
3 Rick Tocchet, Phoenix: Winger's aggressive play was highlighted by a goal and an assist.
