Nommé entraîneur-adjoint pour l’equipe canadienne:
"C'est un honneur"

Guy Carbonneau n'a jamais eu l'occasion de représenter son pays sur la scène internationale alors qu'il était joueur. Cette occasion s'est présentée maintenant qu'il a accroché ses lames. Jeudi, Carbo a été confirmé dans le rôle d'entraîneur-adjoint de l'équipe nationale qui représentera le Canada au championnat du monde de hockey qui débutera en Allemagne à la fin d'avril.

"C'est un honneur", a-t-il déclaré avant le match qui opposait le Canadien au Lightning de Tampa Bay. "Il s'agit pour moi d'une première expérience."

Carbonneau a reçu un appel de Wayne Gretzky et de Lanny McDonald il y a environ un mois.

"J'ai voulu réfléchir même si j'étais décidé d'y aller à 90 pour cent. J'en ai parlé avec ma femme (Line) avant de prendre une décision finale. Les choses vont parfois très vite, trop vite même."

Carbonneau a raison de se sentir honoré. Entraîneur-adjoint à Montréal, il a été préféré à plusieurs entraîneurs en chef dont son patron immédiat, Michel Therrien.

"Je pense qu'ils recherchaient du sang neuf, explique-t-il. J'ai aussi l'expérience de la Ligue nationale. Je jouais il y un an et je connais les joueurs.

"Je suis quand même surpris d'avoir été choisi comme j'ai été surpris de me retrouver derrière le banc du Canadien, avoue-t-il. Faut croire que ce que j'ai fais comme joueur a attiré l'attention.

"Je ne suis pas mal à l'aise par rapport aux autres, dit-il. Il y a peut-être 15 personnes plus qualifiées que moi pour remplir ce rôle. Mais il faut savoir relever les défis. Pour moi, il s'agira d'une expérience extraordinaire, une occasion de parfaire mes connaissances. J'ai toujours dit qu'on s'améliore en côtoyant meilleur que soi."

"J'ai quelques noms [pour joueurs] en tête, dit-il. J'en ai même du Canadien. Mais je préfère ne rien dire. Je veux leur éviter une déception s'ils ne sont pas choisis.

"Il y aura un mélange de jeunes et de vétérans. Ca devrait donner du hockey excitant. On va jouer sur une grande surface et sans ligne rouge. Je dirais que Lecavalier et Richards vont jouer ensemble. Ils se connaissent bien et ils ont une bonne saison."

Guy Carbonneau never had the chance to represent his country on the international scene when he was a player. The opportunity has arisen now that he has hung up his skates. Thursday, Carbo was confirmed as assistant coach of the national team which will represent Canada at the World Hockey Championship which will begin in Germany at the end of April.

"It is an honor," he declared before the game between the Canadiens and the Tampa Bay Lightning. "It will be a first-time experience for me. "

Carbonneau received a call from Wayne Gretzky and Lanny McDonald approximately a month ago.

"I wanted to think about it even if I were 90 percent decided. I spoke about it with my wife (Line) before making a final decision. The things sometimes go very quickly, too quickly even."

Carbonneau is right to feel honoured. Assistant coach in Montreal, he was favored over several head coaches, including his own team’s, Michel Therrien.

"I think that they were looking for new blood," he explained. "I also have experience in the NHL. I played there until a year ago and I know the players.

"I am nevertheless surprised to have been selected, as I was surprised to find myself behind the bench of the Canadiens," he acknowledged. "I have to believe their attention was drawn to me because of what I did as a player.

"I won’t be ill at ease working with the others," he said. "There are maybe 15 people more qualified than me to fill this role. But it’s good to take on challenges. For me, it will be an extraordinary experience, an occasion to perfect my knowledge. I always said that you improve when working alongside those better than yourself. "

"I have some names [for players] in mind," he said. "Even some Canadiens. But I’d rather not say who. I want to avoid disappointing them if they aren’t selected.

"There will be a mixture of young players and veterans. That will make for some exciting hockey. We will play on a great surface and without the red line. I would say that Lecavalier and Richards will play together. They know each other well and they are having a good season."
