Two Wonderful Programs
I recently received the gift of two unusual programs from Guy's youngest brother Robert, who still lives in Guy's hometown of Sept-Iles, Quebec.

The program for the occasion features congratulatory letters from a number of officials, including Mayor Jean-Marc Dion. Mayor Dion wrote: Parents and friends of Guy Carbonneau, I had wanted to start my speech with a story, "Once upon a time there was a boy who would rise every morning very early to go to hockey practice, accompanied by his mother." This would be true if his mother hadn't had the key to the Palais des sports. Everyone already knew Guy had great aptitude for hockey. In spite of his young age he was ready to sacrifice many things for hockey. Hockey coaches in Pee-wee, Bantam and Midget levels all vied to have Guy on their teams. Scouts for the Sagueneens were quick to find for their team a player of exceptional talent. The Canadiens have learned well that Guy is a natural leader and his teammates have elected him captain and spokesman of their team. This story has continued year after year, and Guy has become the idol of many young people who would love to follow in his footsteps. With much enthusiasm, the Council members unanimously accepted the suggestion of the Committee Guy Carbonneau to designate this arena with the name "Guy-Carbonneau," in honor of the man who created the hockey school here and who has so well represented la Côte-Nord. To Guy, and to the Carbonneau family, we say bravo, best wishes and thanks for the honor you give us by participating in these festivities. Mayor Jean-Marc Dion

The program noted the following accomplishments of Guy's career in Juniors: Team during his junior career: The Chicoutimi Sagueneens, 1976-1977 to 1979-1980. He was picked to play at centre position on the second All Star team in 1979-1980. He amassed over 100 points at each of his two last junior seasons, 141 in 1978-1979 and 182 in 1979-1980, finishing first in team scoring each time. He preserved an average score per game of 1.593 with a total of 435 points in 273 regular season games. In 1979-1980, he held a sequence of 21 consecutive games where he amassed at least one point. Games you can only dream of: On January 13, 1978, at the Georges Vézina Arena, he amassed eight points (4-4-8) in a 13-4 win of the Sagueneens against the Montreal Junior team. On February 27, 1979, he once again amassed eight points (3-5-8) in a 10-4 win of the Sagueneens against the Verdun Eperviers. On February 17, 1980, he totalled eight points (3-5-8) in a 12-3 win of the Sagueneens against the Laval Voisins. Also of note: Guy is president and co-owner of the Sagueneens team. |
