The SportsLine hockey staff takes a look at the league's postseason awards and who we consider the favorites at the All-Star break. Voting were SportsLine senior writer Keith Gave, SportsLine staff writer Michael J. Happy, SportsLine NHL producer Wes Goldstein, and SportsLine NHL editor Dave Doyle.
Selke Trophy
What is it?: Best defensive forward.
Who is it named after?: Frank Selke, coach, manager and executive of Stanley Cup winners in Toronto and Montreal with over 60 years in hockey.
Fast fact: With a win this season, Dallas' Guy Carbonneau would tie Bob Gainey for most Selkes (four).
1. Guy Carbonneau, Dallas
The Stars considered cutting the 39-year old center before the season. Instead he is playing his most inspired hockey in years.
2. (tie) Tim Taylor, New York Rangers
Once again Boston's loss is New York's gain as free-agent signee Taylor has emerged as a checking machine.
2. (tie) Michael Peca, Buffalo
Peca, the 1997 Selke winner, is still driving opposing forwards batty.
Thanks to Scott Calder for reporting this news flash to me!
Addendum from 2/18/00: During the ESPN broadcast of the Stars v. the Coyotes, commentators Gary Thorne and Bill Clement spoke of Guy's marvelous play this season. Both agreed that Carbo was the leading contender for the Selke trophy this year and said that such an honor would be well deserved.
