TSN visits Guy's first day on the job

August 21, 2000: TSN’s Brent Wallace was on hand for Guy Carbonneau’s first day in his new position as Supervisor of Player Development for the Montreal Canadiens. This is a transcript of his report.

Wallace: Guy Carbonneau was back on the ice for the first time since announcing his retirement earlier this year. And for Carbonneau it was a whole new experience.

Guy: This is going to take me a month or two months to really know all the players and feel comfortable in that new environment, because I’m used to taking orders and not giving them, so... But I feel confident that it’s going to be a good thing.

Wallace: Carbonneau, along with director of hockey personnel André Savard, will oversee the development of the Canadien’s prospects. And you just have to look on the back of Carbonneau’s hockey cards to see his impressive resumé.

André Savard: Obviously he’s a very smart person. He’s played the game…he’s an asset because of his hockey sense and because of his anticipation, his work ethic and his willingness to work on a consistent basis, so all of that just gives such a good message.

Guy: It’s the just experience I have gained through the years. Obviously I saw it a little bit today when you say something players listen a little bit more because you have the background and they don’t have to doubt what you’re talking about.

Wallace: And players like Ron Hainsey and Eric Chouinard are hoping to draw on that experience from a likely Hall of Famer.

Ron Hainsey: I guess, the best way to put it is it’s pretty cool, when you’re a young guy like me and just got done watching him in the Stanley Cup Playoffs and when he won the Cup two years ago with Dallas. It’s kind of cool to have him out here and you listen to what he has to say.

Eric Chouinard: Personally, for me, it’s good to have him. He’s a centerman that played lots of years in the NHL. So it’s great to have him around.

Wallace: As for a future in coaching, well, Carbonneau hasn’t ruled that out yet. However, he says he will wait at least two more years before making a decision.
